Leo Strauss on Religion as the Fundamental Alternative to Philosophy

Leo Strauss is well known for his thesis that there an irreconcilable conflict between philosophy and “revelation,” i.e. monotheistic revealed religion, which cannot be harmonized. The philosopher qua a believer, while the believer philosopher. However, it less widely recognized Strauss’ thought about religion as fundamental alternative to follows two divergent trajectories. first emphasizes unique importance of other what he calls “religion in general.” Sometimes, suggests revelation poses “challenge” philosophy, such must refute mere possibility order justify legitimacy itself. however, rather like any other, not essentially different from e.g. ancient polytheism, would seem therefore pose no “challenge.” I argue ultimately fails reconcile these strands this failure related both tensions internal positive conception itself middle path dogmatism skepticism fact begs question by assuming, than proving, necessarily “the very idea revelation” harmonized with philosophy.
